API 653 In‑Service Inspections

Vertix Reliability & Asset Management performs in‑service inspections—also referred to as external inspections—while tanks remain in operation or when internal access is not feasible. These inspections involve a detailed visual assessment of the tank’s exterior to identify leaks, shell distortion, settlement, corrosion, and to evaluate the condition of coatings, insulation, and appurtenances.

Typically conducted at five‑year intervals, in‑service inspections may be required more frequently for tanks operating in aggressive or highly corrosive environments. Using advanced ultrasonic thickness testing technologies—both manual and robotic—Vertix Reliability & Asset Management accurately monitors corrosion rates and establishes appropriate inspection intervals based on actual asset condition.

All inspections are performed in accordance with API 653 requirements to verify mechanical integrity, ensure safe operation, and support early detection of degradation. The data collected enables proactive maintenance planning, helping to reduce the risk of failure and mitigate potential environmental impacts.
