API 653 Out‑of‑Service Inspections

Out‑of‑service (internal) tank inspections involve a comprehensive evaluation of all accessible internal and external components performed by certified API 653 inspectors. Because these inspections require the tank to be fully isolated and taken offline, they provide a critical opportunity to assess structural integrity, identify leaks, evaluate corrosion mechanisms, and detect potential environmental or operational hazards. Key areas—including tank shells, roofs, nozzles, piping, and appurtenances—are examined using a range of industry‑approved non-destructive examination (NDE) methods.

Ultrasonic testing is used to measure wall thickness and determine corrosion rates, while Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) is Vertix’s preferred technique for tank bottom inspections due to its speed, accuracy, and ability to detect both surface and subsurface anomalies. Our inspectors utilize advanced MFL systems to efficiently identify areas of concern across large floor surfaces.

Welds and critical joints are assessed using vacuum box testing, magnetic particle testing, and liquid penetrant testing to detect cracks, pinholes, and other discontinuities in metal plates. All inspection activities are performed in accordance with API 653 requirements to ensure a thorough evaluation of mechanical integrity and corrosion conditions.

Based on inspection results, Vertix Reliability & Asset Management develops targeted recommendations and mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of failure and support safe, reliable, and compliant tank operation.
